As the nation readies to celebrate its newest federal holiday, Juneteenth — a commemoration of the Emancipation Proclamation reaching Galveston Bay, Texas, on June, 19th, 1865 — many are curious about what businesses and operations will be open this Wednesday.
Since Juneteenth, also known colloquially as the second Independence Day, is a federal holiday, government agencies and schools will be closed on June 19.
However, many private institutions will remain open while others will observe the holiday. These are the entities that will be either open or closed.
Post offices & the USPS
As the United States Postal Service is a branch of the federal government, all post offices will be closed on Juneteenth, according to the agency.
There is also no normal mail delivery on June 19.
The only exception is holiday premium Priority Mail Express, the USPS announced.
FedEx
All aspects of FedEx’s day-to-day business are slated to open on Juneteenth, according to the company.
UPS
According to UPS’ holiday schedule, all operations will function normally on June 19.
Banks
Branches for Capital One, Bank of America, PNC, Truist, CitiBank, and JPMorgan Chase will be closed on Juneteenth, according to USA Today.
Major stores
Target, Aldi, Walmart, Costco, and Trader Joe’s will be open at normal business hours on Juneteenth, according to DelawareOnline.
