Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Drew Barrymore and Rose McGowan were part of Wes Craven’s 1996 slasher film, “Scream” — but only one of the leading ladies forgot how to scream while filming her death scene.
The Post spoke to special makeup effects supervisor Greg Nicotero, who brought Craven’s bloody death scenes to life for the blockbuster. She shared that the late director repeatedly begged McGowan, now 51, to “scream” as her character Tatum was being crushed to death by a garage door.
While this scene will go down in history as one of the most memorable “Scream” deaths of the ’90s, it wasn’t all smooth sailing behind the scenes.
“And the funny thing about it was, when we were shooting, I remember, you know, Wes kept saying, ‘Scream! Scream! Scream! You really have to scream!’ And she didn’t — she wasn’t,” Nicotero told The Post in an interview on October 15. “He was like, ‘I don’t understand why she’s not screaming because her head is being crushed. ”
Nicotero pointed out the irony.
“It was just kind of — it was an interesting note that we were working on this project that would later be called ‘Scream,’ and, Wes was just trying his best to get her to scream,” he Laughed.
The Post has contacted McGowan for comment.
Nicotero – whose Includes impressive resume “The Walking Dead,” “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” “The Hills Have Eyes,” “Breaking Bad,” “Machete Kills” and more – he shares his tricks on how to bring Craven’s slasher scenes to the big screen Did.
“So, you know, we made a dummy of Drew Barrymore, you know, we made a dummy of Rose McGowan. You know, we did a lot of different things because Wes wanted to see that kind of impact moment,” he shared of Barrymore and McGowan’s on-screen deaths.
Barrymore dies in the opening scene when the killer (aka Ghostface) tears out her insides and ties her to a tree for her parents to find out; However, that was not the first murder.
While she was playing a statistics game on the phone with a serial killer, her jock boyfriend was murdered first after he was tied to a chair and his intestines were pulled out.
Nicotero said, “It really was for me, it was a lot of fun.”
There were iconic death scenes throughout ’90s film that became highest grossing film of the year and brought in $173 million worldwide.
McGowan’s damsel in distress performance reached its peak when she became trapped in the garage with Ghostface while having too much beer during a high school house party. While she was playing with her act after closing the automatic garage door, Rose’s character was frightened when the mysterious man behind the white mask pulled out a knife and stabbed her in the arm.
She fought the good fight, but Tatum eventually got trapped in the doggie door as she tried to escape Ghostface.
The brutal end to Tatum’s life came when Ghostface recognized that she could not get out and proceeded to click the button on the automatic garage door.
Spectators watched in horror as McGowan’s body rose into the air, being crushed with every inch – until it was too late.
However, watching the scene after talking to Nicotero, it’s hard to notice that the actress hardly screams or screams before getting her head completely crushed.
McGowan has spoken out about the murder scene before.
“He was going to stay up all night. In a real garage. It was really cold,” she said Entertainment Weekly in 2011. “I was actually going up and down the dog door, and since then I’ve learned that I can fit in almost any dog door. And because I’m pretty skinny, I kept falling through it. They had to nail my shirt to the wood or I would fall out. In fact, that’s how I get into my homes when I’m locked out. ,laughs) That’s my conclusion scream: I know I can fit through the dog door. You have to bend your body into a certain position and really hope you’re not wearing something super fancy.”
He also spilled his tea backstage.
McGown joked, “I’m known for having the worst aim on the planet, and so when I was throwing beer bottles (at Ghostface), I broke the camera lens.”
Craven directed three other films for the franchise, “Scream 2” (1997), “Scream 3” (2000) and “Scream 4” (2011), which saw the return of Campbell, Cox and David Arquette (Officer Dewey Riley). Hui.
With Hollywood veterans Sarah Michelle Gellar, Timothy Olyphant, Jada Pinkett Smith, Heather Graham, Laurie Metcalf, Liev Schreiber and Luke Wilson joining the cast, the ’97 sequel grossed $172.4 million at the box office worldwide.
The legendary director died in 2015 at the age of 76 after a battle with brain cancer – but his slasher franchise lives on.
“Scream 5” and “Scream VI” were directed by Tyler Gillette and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, starring new scream queens Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera.
The debut date for “Scream VII” is 2026, but Ortega dropped out of the film in March due to scheduling conflicts with Season 2 of “Wednesday.” Barrera will also not return after being removed from the film due to her social media posts regarding the Israel-Hamas war.
