WASHINGTON – The White House promised Tuesday that Iran will face “severe consequences” for its Ballistic missile attack on Israel on Tuesday – but declined to provide details of what they might be.
National security adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters that the US helped Israel successfully counter about 180 missiles fired by Tehran at the Jewish state, as the Pentagon noted that the US destroyers USS Cole and USS Bulkeley fired about 100 missiles at Iranian projectiles. Launched a dozen interceptors.
Sullivan asserted, “It appears that this attack has been defeated and ineffective.”
He added, “We are proud of the actions we have taken together with Israel to protect and defend Israel.” “We have made clear that this attack will have consequences – serious consequences – and we will work with Israel to make it succeed.”
Sullivan said Tuesday’s attack was “a significant escalation by Iran, a significant event, and it is equally significant that we were able to step up with Israel.”
As of Tuesday afternoon, Eastern time, Israeli officials had attributed the death of one Palestinian and two injuries to the barrage in the West Bank city of Jericho.
“Now we’re going to look at what the appropriate next steps are to, first of all, secure American interests and then promote stability to the greatest extent possible,” Sullivan said, when pressed on what those steps would be. If possible, he objected.
“Subsequently we have had some preliminary discussions with the Israelis at the military level and also at the White House-Prime Minister’s Office level,” he said. “We will continue those conversations in the coming hours.”
At the State Department, spokesman Matthew Miller said the Harris-Biden administration “will coordinate with (Israel) on any response.”
“Iran will face consequences for this attack – we have made clear that there will be consequences,” he said. “I’m not going to go on today about what those outcomes will be, but those are things we will coordinate with our Israeli counterparts on.”
Reports on Tuesday indicated that Israel plans to launch “powerful airstrikes throughout the Middle East” In response to Iran’s attack.
