A woman stunned customers at a Florida restaurant Saturday night when she drove through the dining area on a golf cart — crashing into tables and seriously injuring several people.
A surveillance camera at Tako Tiki in Jensen Beach recorded the shocking incident, which began when the woman accidentally drove the cart onto a narrow ramp that leads to a covered outdoor dining room, According to ABC 25 in West Palm Beach.
The vehicle crushed a table where two women were sitting, then continued to crush a group of other stunned restaurant goers, according to a video released by the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.
“It’s very dramatic,” said Capt. Ruben Romero of the office’s road patrol. “You can see some people almost get under the golf cart.”
Several people were injured, including a woman who suffered a broken hip. But none of the injuries were life-threatening, the captain said.
Shockingly, while authorities say alcohol was not involved in the crash, Romero noted that the female driver had passed police sobriety tests, ABC said.
“He claimed to have had a sip of an alcoholic beverage with dinner,” the captain said. “We did all the testing with our traffic and our DUI units, and the results were that she was not under the influence at the time.”
An employee of a nearby resort drove the vehicle to the restaurant, and at some point took the unidentified woman, police said.
Details of the incident are unclear, but the woman eventually tried to drive herself — even though she apparently didn’t know how.
“She said she was trying to turn it on, but she didn’t know how to turn it on and it hit a table full of people eating dinner,” Romero said.
The police accused him of causing hurt by careless driving.
