World’s Biggest Car Makers Are Giving Highest Salary Hike In 25 Years! – Trak.in

Understanding the “shuntō” Wage Talks

The annual “shuntō” wage talks in Japan serve as a crucial event where major Japanese firms engage in negotiations with labor unions to determine pay raises for the upcoming year. This tradition sets a precedent that extends beyond the participating firms, influencing wage decisions across the country.

Significant Increases in Automotive Sector

Toyota, Nissan, Honda, and Mazda, among others, have fully met their labor union’s demands for substantial pay raises. Toyota, the world’s largest carmaker, agreed to monthly pay raises of up to ¥28,440 ($193), while Nissan agreed to an average increase of ¥18,000 ($121) per month. This demonstrates a strong momentum for wage hikes in the automotive sector.

Growing Trend of Global Pay Increases

The trend of wage increases is not limited to Japan. Globally, auto workers are experiencing significant pay raises, following negotiations led by the United Auto Workers (UAW) with major automakers in the U.S. Last year, Ford, GM, and Stellantis agreed to record pay increases, prompting non-union factories to follow suit. Automakers like Toyota, Tesla, Volkswagen, Nissan, Subaru, and Hyundai have also raised wages to address growing labor challenges.
