“Yellowstone” fans are angry with how the show handled Kevin Costner’s exit in the Season 5 Part 2 premiere.
Minutes into the episode, Costner’s John Dutton is found dead from a gunshot wound. Initially it is believed that he has committed suicide.
However, it is later revealed that John was actually murdered in a plot hatched by lawyer Sarah Atwood (Dawn Olivieri), who is sleeping with Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley).
While Costner confirmed his exit from the show before the second half of Season 5, fans were still shocked as to how their beloved character exited.
Viewers criticized the Paramount Network cowboy series and creator Taylor Sheridan on social media for the shocking decision.
“John Dutton deserved to go out not like a victim, but like a gladiator. Completely undoes the series. I’m not a fan at all of how #Yellowstone handled Costner’s departure,” one fan. written on x (formerly Twitter).
Another person said, “If this is how they decide to kill off such a great character like John Dutton… that’s too bad.” Said,
“Really sad that John Dutton will be killed by suicide from #YellowstoneTV. Kevin Costner is #Yellowstone. Shame on you Taylor Sheridan. Booooo!!! He deserved better. And he should have been this season. America can even vote you out!” to someone else wroteThe episode was the first to reveal how John Dutton actually died.
a different audience Said“Even we thought we knew Kevin Costner wasn’t supposed to come back for the rest of #Yellowstone. The way they ended his character was just stupid and lazy. This could have been a better way or he would have just walked off into the sunset.
“The fans of this show and Kevin Costner (John Dutton) deserved better than this! Taylor Sheridan I don’t know if I’ll support another one of your shows!!! #Yellowstone and ratings will suffer! Laziest writing ever.” another fan Complained.
Other viewers blamed Costner, 69, for his departure midway through the show’s final season.
“Kevin Costner ruined this show’s perfect ending and everything for a failed 3 part sh-t movie,” someone wrote, referring to Costner’s “Horizon” film series.
“Anyone who’s surprised that John Dutton was murdered in the first episode of this final season of @Yellowstone hasn’t been paying attention,” Another fan wroteAdding, “Kevin Costner was too busy with his other projects to finish Dutton’s story, so Taylor Sheridan did what he had to do. On to the next one.”
In May 2023, news broke that Costner would not return to “Yellowstone” after Season 5 Part 1.
That same month, it was announced that the show would end with season 5, leading to speculation that the show was ending partly because Costner was leaving.
Sheridan, 54, hinted that Costner was choosing “Horizon” over “Yellowstone” — but Costner had a different story.
In May 2024, the Oscar winner told Deadline that “Yellowstone” is “number one” on his list of priorities. “I didn’t make ‘Horizon’ because I was tired of doing ‘Yellowstone’. It’s a good story. I didn’t make ‘Horizon’ to compete with ‘Yellowstone’. This (project) is something that I had Has been for a long time,” he said.
Costner said, “I was straight with (Taylor Sheridan), and he said what we would do, and I believed him.” “And we didn’t get there.”
Costner officially confirmed his exit from the show in June 2024.
“Thinking about Yellowstone, that beloved series I love, I know you love it. I just realized that I wouldn’t be able to continue this in season five or in the future,” the Hidden Figures star said an instagram video,
“I liked it and I know you liked it too. I just wanted to let you know that I will not be returning,” he shared.
Some cast members reacted to Costner’s exit before the premiere of Season 5 Part 2.
“He is a huge part of this show. “I feel very fortunate to be able to work with him,” Bentley, 46, told The Post.
Luke Grimes, who plays Kayce Dutton, told The Post, “When you lose such a big presence…it’s just as important to the story. You know, he’s John Dutton. He is the patriarch. He’s a movie star on our sets… so, of course, when he leaves, things change.
Grimes, 40, said, “But art imitates life and the story will feel the same way.” “I think in turn, you use that weight and make it very compelling to the story.”
“Yellowstone” airs Sunday nights at 8 pm ET on the Paramount Network.
