Apple has recently refreshed its all-in-one PC lineup with the launch of New iMac with M4 processor. Along with the upgraded iMac, Apple has also launched a redesigned Magic Mouse, Magic Keyboard, and Magic Trackpad that ditch the old Lightning connector in favor of the USB-C standard. Since the new iPhone and iPad do not come with a Lightning cable, users may not have a compatible cable if their peripheral runs out of charge. Thankfully, you can now use a USB-C cable to charge your iPhone, iPad, MacBook, Magic Mouse, and other peripherals.
Although the addition of a USB-C port is a nice change, the Magic Mouse still has that design flaw that has plagued iMac owners for years. You guessed it right! The new USB-C Magic Mouse still has a charging port on the bottom. I think this is one of the most annoying design flaws ever found in Apple products. When the Magic Mouse’s battery runs out and you need to charge it, you can’t use the mouse because you have to turn it upside down to plug in the charging cable.
Now that Apple has replaced the Lightning connector with a USB-C port, it should have also considered relocating the charging port to the bottom. It has always been the case that the charging port remains at the bottom and users remain frustrated. While we have seen some updates to the Magic Mouse, the charging port is still down.
Today, almost every wireless mouse has a charging port on the upper half of the body so that users can charge and use the mouse at the same time. Sadly, Apple doesn’t believe in this feature. Apple said they placed the charging port on the bottom of the mouse to achieve a seamless top and front appearance while maintaining their minimalist design philosophy. Well, this may make the mouse aesthetically pleasing, but it is not a user-friendly option.
Even after many years, users will still have to deal with this problem. Even if you invest in a new $99 Magic Mouse, you still can’t use it while it’s charging. If it dies, forget about your work, and just turn your mouse over and wait for the battery to drain. Come on Apple, just admit and fix this weird design choice.
