spoilers below On the premiere of “Yellowstone” Season 5B.
The second half of the final season begins with an episode that revolves around the death of John Dutton. Yes, it turns out that “Yellowstone” addressed Costner’s absence by swiftly and brutally killing off his character. Ouch.
The episode begins with Beth getting out of her car at her father’s house and is terrified to see a swarm of police and ambulances outside. “He’s my father, what happened, is this a crime scene?” she asks. She desperately calls her brother Kayce and tells him, “I don’t know anything, but I know he’s gone.”
When Kayas arrives, the brother-sister duo enter the house. The policemen with serious faces tell them that they don’t want to watch, but they watch anyway.
There is a body on the ground, a pile of blood and a gun on the floor, and blood spatter on the wall – John has died from a gunshot wound, but his face is not shown (as it is clearly a has a body double, as Costner) was not on set to film it).
As Beth and Kayce cry and embrace, Beth bitterly says, “It was Jamie.”
The scene cuts to local news anchors reporting that John’s house is surrounded by police, and he makes no statement. A local news anchor says, “It appears Montana’s 26th governor has died.” (Although this anchor is right, no real anchor would say this before doing a more in-depth report and getting confirmation. Oh okay).
“Yellowstone” then interrogates Jamie, as he gets a call and looks sad. The audience does not hear who called him or what was said, but rather it appears to be the news of John’s death. Since he is the Attorney General, Jamie holds a press conference to inform the public that John has died. His throat gets clogged and he has difficulty speaking words. Jamie’s feelings over John’s death appear genuine.
Therefore, it is not yet clear whether Beth is right that Jamie killed John.
The scene returns to Beth and Kayce. Beth is shocked to hear that John’s death was ruled a suicide.
Beth reiterates that Jamie did it. Although Kayce agrees with him that it cannot be suicide, he says, “I don’t think Jamie is capable of it.”
Growing more hysterical, Beth calls Rip, who is in Texas, and says, “Baby, they f–king killed him. My father.”
After this the episode flashes back to six weeks ago.
Sarah Atwood (Dawn Olivieri), the evil lawyer who is sleeping with Jamie, is shown meeting a sophisticated hit man.
They discuss killing John. The affected person tells him that the best way to do this would be to fake suicide, as a staged heart attack is risky, as a toxicology report could catch them.
After she gives him the green light to act, the scene shows Jamie crying in his room.
Sarah comes into John’s bedroom, dressed in lingerie and holding glasses of champagne, ready to celebrate the murder. She is confused as to why Jamie is crying.
He said, “We discussed it and you said to go ahead.”
So, it turns out that Beth is right to some extent, but not entirely: John’s death is Jamie’s fault, but indirectly. He seems shocked and disappointed that Sara actually went ahead and booked the hit.
Jamie wasn’t the one to pull the trigger, and he wasn’t the one to hire the hitman. Her tears aren’t fake – especially when she started crying alone, before she even realized Sarah was there. He doesn’t seem to be over John’s death.
The way the show sets it up, it seems like the final part of the episode will be about Beth shooting Jamie in revenge.
The episode ends with Rip arriving home and Beth crying in his arms.
“Yellowstone” airs Sunday nights at 8 p.m. on Paramount Network.
