New York Attorney General Letitia James vowed to “fight again” as she and Gov. Kathy Hochul treated President-elect Donald Trump as the enemy in a divisive post-election press conference on Wednesday.
A defiant Hochul announced that he has formed the “Empire State Freedom Initiative” to prepare to fight “policy and regulatory threats” from the incoming Trump administration.
The Democratic governor said he was willing to work with Trump, but spent most of his time talking about preparations for a political and legal battle.
“Anytime you try to harm New Yorkers or take away their rights, I will fight you every step of the way,” Hochul said during a press conference in her Manhattan office.
They treated Trump’s victory like a funeral – he won both the electoral and popular votes nationwide and performed more strongly in blue New York.
“New Yorkers will persevere for the next four years,” he said.
Meanwhile, James said his office was “preparing” for a possible second Trump administration.
“I am prepared to do everything in my power to ensure that our state and country do not fall behind,” he said in a statement. “Together with Governor Hochul, our partners in state and local government, and my fellow attorneys general across the country, we will work every day to protect Americans, no matter what this new administration throws at us. We are ready to fight again.”
Republicans described Hochul’s dual press conference as bizarre and counterproductive.
“Hochul is out of his mind,” said Ed Cox, chairman of the state Republican Party.
“This will not help New Yorkers. It’s stupid and bizarre,” he said.
