New York City's pizza still ranks supreme—no matter how you slice it.
A Manhattan culinary hub has reclaimed the title of best pie in the world, beating out two Southern Italian giants.
Una Pizza Napoletana of 175 Orchard Street — which won the title in 2022 and was named best pizza pie in America for the third year in a row last June — completed the trifecta by taking the number one spot globally This week's 50 top pizzas by,
Last year, 10 Diego Vitagliano of Napoli and Francesco Martucci of Caserta tie for first place Una Pizza Napoletana came in second. This year, the two locations tied again, this time finishing in second place behind the Lower East Side champion.
“In a country that has always been used to putting everything on pizza, Anthony proposes only the purest tradition in toppings, Exceptional quality materials“Owner Anthony Mangieri is known for his Marinara, Margherita, and Cossacca styles, as well as a rotating pie,” the awards site says.
“It’s been a great inspiration to have this identity over the 30 years of my career, especially in Naples where pizza originated,” said the Jersey Shore native and Yankees fan — who has relocated his storefront. from New Jersey San Francisco in 2022 and later to the Lower East Side — told CNN Travel,
They believe a good pizza starts with the dough. At Una Pizza Napoletana, a strong effort is made to keep the main ingredients hydrated – and only in the best hands.
“After 25 years, except for me, nobody makes dough in the restaurant,” Mangieri it was said before,
“Whatever pizza people eat, I still make the dough myself in the morning.”
And, though Mangieri is grateful for the honor, he still has a higher purpose hidden behind the kitchen counter.
“This recognition is appreciated, but at the end of the day, it’s not the reason I started nor why I continue to make every ball of dough served at Una after all these years,” he said.
“It makes us want to go into the restaurant every day and give it extra love and attention and not take anything for granted.”
Other notable venues in the top ten include The Pizza Bar in Tokyo in 38th place, Confine in Milan, Italy in fourth place, and Napoli on the Road in London, England in fifth place.
Tony's Pizza Napoletana in San Francisco ranked sixth and I Tigli in San Bonifacio came in seventh. Rounding out the top 10 are Sartoria Panatieri in Barcelona, Spain, 50 Calò in Naples and Seu Pizza Illuminati in Rome, respectively.
Locally, Ribalta near Union Square ranked 19th, Don Antonio's in Midtown was 30th, and Brooklyn's L'Industrie — which was awarded the best slice in America by the organization last June — was ranked 80th.
