A young Australian has revealed why he is fed up with “superficial” dating in Australia at the moment.
23-year-old Zac O’Brien is a professional martial arts fighter who has recently returned from Thailand and is checking out the Sydney dating scene.
23 years old Took to TikTok to tell the story of a blind date where sparks weren’t flying at all.
O’Brien said she knew the date was not going to go well because it was so “awkward”, but things changed when someone else gave her her number.
It was a real win and a change in how hard dating can be.
“Dating in general in 2024 is about as hard as finding the right psychologist,” he told news.com.au.
She said dating is “difficult” and social media makes it harder to find real relationships.
“Social media and the way technology is getting involved in it has created a really toxic kind of dating stigma,” she said.
O’Brien said dating is now “superficial” and trying to find “Gen Z love” is not easy.
“I wish I was born in the 90s,” he said.
He explained that he was tired of dating apps and the mindless nature of swiping and matching.
“I would prefer to meet someone more naturally,” he admitted.
He explained that dating culture has now become so online based that it is considered taboo to approach someone in public.
“Displeasure has been expressed over this. People think you look desperate,” he said.
“I am a rare case. I have a strange kind of confidence that I’m fortunate to have and I don’t care about it.”
“What’s the worst thing they’re going to say? ‘No’.”
O’Brien also needs to pay attention to his health as he suffers from heart problems.
“Yeah. I’ve been dealing with health issues, but it’s not the girls that are breaking my heart. It’s a legitimate heart issue,” he said.
He said that due to the nature of his work it is extra difficult for him to meet someone he wants to have a relationship with.
“It is a selfish game. Your whole life revolves around fighting, and you’re hungry, and you’re disciplined,” he said.
“It seems crazy to the general public.”
O’Brien said that his commitment to fighting has caused problems in past relationships because he is so dedicated to the sport.
Yet if the right person comes along, Mr. O’Brien would be willing to make the connection.
